Общественное движение, члены которого выступали за распространение образования среди взрослых [adult education], оказало большое влияние на систему образования в XIX в. Начато Дж. Холбруком [Holbrook, Josiah] в 1826 в г. Миллбери, шт. Массачусетс. В 1831 его участники в разных штатах объединились в организацию "Американский лицей" [American Lyceum], проводившую национальные съезды до 1839. В 1850-е гг. основные идеи были использованы новым движением "Чатокуа" [Chautauqua Movement]
